For the continuation of our Florida History theme, the elementary school students have been studying the founding of St. Augustine with several activities on coquina (the material the Castillo de San Marcos is made of); the British period, with an activity on taxation without representation; and the 2nd Spanish period and the Seminoles, with activities on the Everglades, Seminole legends, patchwork designs and Osceola. They are now embarking on pioneer activities while studying Territorial Florida and the Seminole Wars, how Tallahassee became the capital, how the second Seminole War ended, and how Florida became a state. The next section of the theme will be devoted to the development of Florida industries.
