The Magnolia math curriculum allows each child to work at his or her own pace, exploring and developing an understanding of concepts in many different ways.
An emphasis is placed on building a strong foundation for later growth in math, as well as learning to solve problems, applying math concepts appropriately, and thinking mathematically.
- Focus on problem solving
- Hands-on approach
- Challenging curriculum
Early math focuses on recognizing and describing patterns, learning to communicate about math discoveries, and building a strong understanding of the concepts of addition and subtraction. We use a variety of manipulatives blocks, beads, interlocking cubes and pattern blocks to understand the concepts and later add the symbols needed to write equations. A thorough exploration of the concept of base 10 is also included.
Older children continue to use a hands-on approach to gain a clear understanding of the concepts involved in more advanced addition and subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and percents. Explorations of other areas of math including measurement, data collection, geometry, probability, beginning algebra, money and time are a continuing part of our math curriculum.
